Living in the past, or the future, is a good way to make your ‘present’ unhappy. The past is gone — over. The future? Well, it’s anyone’s guess what it holds, but the reality is, it’s not yet here. Why sacrifice our happiness today, over things we can’t control?
I came across a very wise quote about living in the past which made me stop and think — do I do this? Do I sometimes live in the past? I realized that yes, I sometimes do, particularly when I’m feeling a bit down in the present. I, like so many other people, tend to remember the past better than it really was and this is especially true if I’ve had a bad day. Was the past always so idyllic and blissful? Not at all. So when I find myself longing for my days of yore, I now know that I need to snap myself back into the present-day, to be living in the moment.
While reflecting on our past is not a bad thing, it can be if we ruminate on it. Happiness can be found in fond memories, but that’s what they are — memories. Happiness should be fully experienced in the now and if we find ourselves glorifying our past, it may mean that something is missing in our lives now.
This is the quote that really made me stop and think. Whether our past be filled with happiness and joy, or not, at some point, we need to firmly step into the now — in the moment, where we should be living.
Don’t let past relationships and old mistakes ruin your future.
Don’t let someone or something that didn’t make it in your life,
continue to hurt you. If you do, you’re still giving a portion of
your life to something that no longer exists – it’s like letting
your happiness slip into a black hole. Learn the lesson, release
the pain, and move on. Scars remind us of where we have been,
not where we are headed.
Simple, yet insightful words, which I hope you’ve found as beneficial as I have.
