Individuals and entire societies can be judged on how they treat the most vulnerable among us. In the U.S., we’re fortunate that animal welfare is an important issue. While we still have work to do, that we openly discuss animal rights, shows that we care.
Unfortunately, as a recent video out of Indonesia proves, not all countries hold animal welfare as an important issue and because of this lack of concern, many animals are routinely mistreated.
Warning: This video depicts distressing content.
The sad and eerie clip, filmed by a passing driver in Bogor, Indonesia, shows the helpless monkey wearing a pink tracksuit and chained by his neck to the side of the road. The monkey is cruelly dressed as a blonde doll, forced to perform while wearing a suffocating mask in the heat of the day. Sadly clutching a blue bucket to collect money for her “owner,” the monkey stands and looks forlornly around, waiting for anyone who might be willing to offer some payment for his act.
Animal lovers across the world are voicing their disgust and outrage over the clip.
The upsetting clip has made its way across social media, with one person writing:
“Poor monkey! Chained by his neck and tortured just to please human beings.”
Its believed that the Monkey was forced to be part of a common street performance in Indonesia known as Topeng Monyet, (“Monkey’s Mask”). The cruel and controversial form of ‘entertainment’ includes captive Macaque monkeys forced to dress as humans and perform stunts — many of the monkey’s are so mentally and physically traumatized, they’re never able to return to a normal life in their natural habitat.
