Have you heard of “Pedals,” the Bear? Pedals is a North American Black Bear, but trust me, he is no ordinary bear. In fact, “Pedals” is a most extraordinary animal and the mere sight of him stirs frenzied joy and excitement. Please read on to learn more about this truly wonderful animal.
Pedals came by his name because of the unique way he walks — Pedals strolls along upright, on on two legs!
Sadly, Pedals doesn’t walk upright out of choice and experts believe he has two injured front legs which prevent him from walking on all fours. Meandering through backyards in northern New Jersey, a “Pedals” sighting elicits delight — he is docile and seems comfortable around people, which is more out of necessity than design.
Despite his handicap, Pedals is active, appears healthy and seems to be happy. There is a movement to have him moved to a protective sanctuary for his own safety, as he has been spotted lying in the road from exhaustion and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife said in a recent statement that they will intervene if Pedals begins to show signs of weakening health.
Pedals is truly a joy and inspiration and he is a reminder that we humans have a very serious obligation to protect all animals and nature.
Because we love Pedals so much, you can also see him in this bonus clip as well!
Pedals is beautiful. It’s heart-breaking that he’s been injured, but his resilience is astonishing. Should Pedals be in a protective sanctuary for his own good? It’s a tough question, because while he does seem to be doing well, he is clearly not at 100%. But Pedals reminds us all that kindness to animals is extremely important.
