Helping others and uplifting each other, even complete strangers, is one of the most beautiful callings in the Christendom. We are taught to always do the right thing, even when its not always easy.
We often hear people from older generations say that in “their day,” people were kinder and friendlier — that people looked out for each other and neighbor helped neighbor. And you know what? They are absolutely correct. People were much warmer and willing to do good than they are today. And its a shame that many of today’s youth don’t feel its their “job” to help anyone but themselves.
Isaiah 10:1–2 is an important Bible passage on many levels:
“Woe to those who make unjust laws,” said Isaiah, “to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights.”
Looking around the world today, one has to ask how we can possibly continue on as is, when on a daily basis, we see and hear of absolute horrors happening in our world. In fact, no nation is spared — cruelty, coldness, harshness and vindictiveness permeates the air all across the globe.
The Bible doesn’t just tell us how to treat others, in essence, its a command, particularly for Christians:
Jesus speaking about the religious leaders of his time “They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.” — Matthew 23:4
“You have neglected the more important matters of the law: justice, mercy and faithfulness.” — Matthew 23:23
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40
“Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” — Proverbs 14:31
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2
These passages show us the way. They teach us that no one should institute unjust laws or policies that harm God’s children — we are told in no uncertain terms, to help the needy and to uplift the downtrodden. And for those that ignore these commands — woe. The wicked are punished, but the meek inherit the earth. Read that again — the wicked are punished…not rewarded.
