Chatting with a friend the other day, and we landed on the topic of the first step to becoming a more positive person. We debated if there were many steps to this transformation, or perhaps just one.
In my opinion, there is no set answer. People move toward positivity for different reasons, in differing degrees, at different times and with varying outcome.
Some people start out on the journey of positivity and then along the way, give up and find that while they’ve made some headway, they’re not at the point in which they want to finish the journey. Others decide they want to shed negativity and they throw 100% into the effort of becoming a positive, happy person, seeing it all the way through.
Because of our discussion, I was reminded of this wonderful quote by Marianne Williamson:
“Hate has talked so loudly for so long. Greed has talked so loudly for so long. Liars have talked so loudly for so long. Love has got to stop whispering.” – Marianne Williamson
Thinking on these wise words gave me keen insight into the journey towards optimism and happiness. For me, I think that for a great many people, the journey begins when one simply becomes tired of the toxic emotions and attitudes like hate, anger, lies, jealousy and greed. At some point, it becomes just too much and we have this miraculous epiphany in which we realize that negative attitudes, beliefs and emotions, are doing us so much harm. We awake to the realization that these toxic attitudes and behaviors are causing so much strife and horrors in our world, that we need to do something about it — and that something, is the personal decision to let those toxic poisons drain out of us.
For me, this is the big one — the catalyst that leads to a road of positivity. When we have just had enough and we say “that’s it, I’m going to take all the power out of the darkness and give it to the light…” Each of us is on a journey and we need to remind our selves that we are more powerful than we realize. Each person who rejects negativity and embraces positivity, is in reality, helping to heal our world and make life on this planet better for all of us.
Today, we should all commit to make sure that love and kindness speak louder than hate, greed, lies and all toxic emotions and habits. Love, after call, can conquer all.
